The International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) established International AAC Awareness Month in October 2007. It is celebrated around the world each October. The goal is to:
raise awareness of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and
to inform the public about the many different ways in which people communicate.
ISAAC has chosen “Vibes of AAC: Check it Out!” as this year’s theme for International AAC Awareness Month. ISAAC also asks that we use the hashtag #AACaware24 on social media.
As emotional beings, all parties come away from communicative interactions with a vibe. A vibe of the person/people they interacted with. A vibe of the encounter.
When we interact with AAC users, what vibe do we give off? Patient and friendly? Genuinely curious about their thoughts and opinions? Comfortable and engaging? Interested in what they have to say? Or something else?
When we interact with AAC users, what vibe do we sense about them?
If we haven’t had many opportunities to interact with a variety of AAC users, we may feel nervous or awkward. We may not know how to best interact with them. We may feel confused. We may be dismissive and overlook them.
This AAC Awareness Month is a good opportunity to learn how we can be better communication partners!
