Let’s Talk AAC: “Carrying straps for AAC devices?”

Welcome back to Let's Talk AAC! NWACS will occasionally post a question or topic along with some related information for discussion. We hope that you will join in the conversation by adding your experiences, resources, related research, etc. in comments so that we can all learn and benefit from each other's knowledge and experience.

A key AAC implementation step is making sure the AAC communicator has access to their AAC system at all times. A big part of this is creating new habits (and visual reminders!). Equally important is figuring out how to (easily) keep the AAC device within arm’s reach and accessible while on the move.

So, let’s talk carrying straps! In particular, let’s focus on carrying options for tablets and low-tech communication books (such as PODD and low-tech back-ups). No endorsement is implied.

Built-in Handles/Straps

Some cases incorporate and handle and/or strap and are good options for some AAC communicators.

  • aXtion protective case line from The Joy Factory offers some options with built-in stands, hand straps, and compatibility with optional shoulder strap; case options for Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung devices; they also offer cases designed for other mounting options

  • Big Grips Lift for iPad offers a built-in handle and integrated strap loops

  • BRAECN cases offer a built-in hand strap, swivel stand, and option for shoulder strap

  • Buddy Kids Case from Pure Sense Cases has a built-in handle and detachable/adjustable shoulder strap

  • GoNow Sleek and Rugged cases (for iPad) have build-in handles and options for shoulder straps; the GoNow cases are also designed to amplify the iPad’s audio

  • iPad Ultimate II Case from RJ Cooper has both a built-in handle and shoulder strap

  • KIDS Case from ProCase is lightweight with a handle and can be folded for use as a stand

  • Kids iPad case from HDE features a built-in handle that folds for use as a stand. It also has holes to attach a strap (also available from HDE)

  • LogansVoice iPad Case from LoganTech includes a built-in handle/stand, shoulder strap, and Bluetooth speaker; snap-on keyguard available; can be mounted to a wheelchair

  • MAXCases offers a variety of protective case options for iPads and Tablets with available options for hand and/or shoulder straps

  • PEPKOO Kids case has a built-in folding handle stand

  • RUG-ED offers protective cases with built-in handles and options for a carrying strap and stand

  • Tobii Dynavox’s TD Speech Case/TD Speech Case Mini offers a built-in handle and a shoulder strap

  • Tablet2Cases offers several options with built-in handles and options for straps (and some with built-in “stands”)

  • VersaWrap from PRC-Saltillo is an impact-resistant iPad case with a built-in handle and holes to attach a strap; it also has a built-in stand; optional Bluetooth VersaSpeaker is sold separately

Harnesses

Harnesses offer a secure way to wear an AAC device, which prevents easy removal (and accidentally leaving it somewhere).

  • The Jabber Jas harness can be ordered through Jabber Jas Harness (all orders are custom made)

  • iPad Chest Pack from Setwear

DIY Options

  • use adhesive anchors for camera tethers (like these) to attach sturdy loops with which to attach the strap of your choice (search camera or binocular straps)

  • carabiner/s-biner clips can be useful

  • zip-ties can be useful

  • use fabric webbing or camera/binocular/guitar straps on binders/bound AAC systems to create a cross-body/shoulder strap
