Resources to Deliver Model as a MASTER PAL Trainings

The Model as a MASTER PAL training was developed by Tabi Jones-Wohleber, MS, CCC-SLP.

“Model as a MASTER PAL was developed to help shape behaviors and belief systems of communication partners supporting individuals who use AAC. It was developed from the premise that 1) AAC implementation is not intuitive, and 2) communication is not compliance. This training series assumes core vocabulary instruction has already been covered, and communication partners require additional information to improve effectiveness of implementation. The structure of this training series lends itself to delivery over time for ongoing discussion and support related to AAC implementation. It emphasizes that modeling language with AAC is the communication partners responsibility (full stop)!”

Tabi Jones-Wohleber provides an overview of Model as a MASTER PAL in this recording from the 2019 AAC in the Cloud

From the 2019 AAC in the Cloud session description:

“A MASTER PAL, or “skilled partner” of an individual who uses AAC engages in authentic and meaningful interactions. However, developing such skills with communication partners is an on-going, nuanced and gradual process. This session lays out a framework for meaningful team dialogue to identify, describe, and discuss interaction behaviors of exemplar communication partners, in digestible chunks. Model as a MASTER PAL has been implemented in a school-based setting, but the content and structure are relevant across environments where AAC communication partners require support to understand and engage in authentic communicative interactions.”
