Title: AAC Assessment Considerations in Degenerative Disease

Description: Degenerative neurologic conditions can have a profound impact on speech and communication. People with these conditions will experience a progressive loss of function over time. They may undergo changes in breathing, speech, movement of the hands and eyes, and more. AAC systems empower these individuals to communicate – even though the ways they communicate may change. This Evening Seminar will explore AAC considerations for populations with degenerative conditions. We will address topics such as:

• Timing of assessment and intervention

• Planning for an anticipated loss of function

• Strategies to promote AAC acceptance and use

• The importance of multimodal communication and communication partner support

• Tailoring assessments and report writing to obtain insurance coverage for high-tech AAC devices
