Minspeak Academy webinar

“Rapid changes in U.S. demographics are being reflected in school and clinic caseloads. Classrooms can now represent up to 20 different cultures and languages. With the cultural makeup of our caseloads ever changing, it can be daunting to think about providing culturally responsive services to our bilingual AAC learners, particularly when there is a linguistic mismatch between the learner and the SLP. This presentation will provide an introductory overview of strategies that monolingual SLPs can add to their toolkit when working with bilingual ACC learners. By incorporating practices such as collecting language history and use information, collaborating effectively with interpreters, partnering with parents, caregivers, and cultural brokers, SLPs will be empowered to provide best practice services to all AAC learners. Including relevant cultural and linguistic information that is gathered from these practices will help facilitate services that are functional, relevant, and individualized to the bilingual AAC learner.”
