TalkingAAC Online Morning Pre-Conference Workshop

“This presentation delves into the critical topic of individualizing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) implementation and transition supports for older learners. Far too often, the phrase “functional life skills” is used to describe curriculum for students in secondary and post-secondary educational programs. While it’s true that it is critical that skills targeted are meaningful and useful to the AAC learner, it is also critical that educators maintain high expectations and rigor for all students. In addition, stakeholders must consider post-secondary services and supports to help align IEP goals to the long term goals of the individual.

Setting individualized goals is important for all learners; however, the process by which these goals are identified varies based on a variety of factors. By collaboratively establishing goals that align with the aspirations, interests, and goals of each learner, we can ensure that AAC interventions are purposeful, relevant, and meaningful. Through examples and case studies, the audience will gain insights into how personalized goals can drive progress and enhance overall communication outcomes.

Additionally, the session highlights the power of person-centered planning in AAC implementation. Engaging the individual, their families, and relevant stakeholders in the planning process fosters a sense of agency and ownership. Attendees will learn practical strategies for conducting comprehensive assessments, identifying communication preferences, and involving the AAC user in decision-making processes. This approach encourages active participation and promotes a sense of empowerment, enabling individuals to have a greater voice in their own lives.

Ultimately, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the importance of individualizing AAC implementation and transition supports for older learners. They will gain practical insights and strategies to enhance person-centered planning, foster self-determination, and promote meaningful communication experiences for high school and transition-aged AAC users, thereby maximizing their overall success and quality of life.”
