Seeing Success: AAC Intervention for Children with CVI

  • Minspeak Academny online USA (map)

Minspeak Academy online class

“Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI), the leading cause of vision loss among children in the US, is a brain based visual impairment. Students may "be able to see" and have no ocular impairment, but they may have difficulty interpreting what they are seeing. With the help of educators, therapists, and caregivers, these students can learn to functionally use their vision to varying degrees! Everyone with CVI has a unique profile of visual characteristics that must be taken into consideration when supporting communication and learning.

Many students with complex disabilities including CVI use alternative augmentative communication (AAC) systems to communicate.  SLPs may lack understanding of the visual characteristics of CVI and how they can impact AAC assessment, intervention, and use. This webinar will explore the visual characteristics of CVI and how they can impact AAC intervention.  Using case studies, specific strategies will be shared to help students make progress in their language and communication skills using AAC. Finally, SLPs will learn accommodations and modifications for AAC systems and intervention. Practical tips will be shared that you can start using the next day!”
