“The Writing with All Tools Continuum is a tool for assessing every individual's writing.
Writing is complex in nature. Every time we write, we need to use language skills, such as generating ideas, words and a narrative; we use word fluency skills such as reproducing sight words and sounding out other words to spell them; and we use motor skills – writing or typing. And, of course, writing also involves other skills, such as each individual’s perception of themselves as a writer and their understandings of the functions of print.
All developing writers need to learn to use this group of skills – and, most importantly, they need to learn to use them simultaneously. This is true for every individual we work with, including individuals with complex communication needs. This complexity of writing leads many of us – both teachers and students – to struggle with teaching and learning it.
The Writing with All Tools Continuum is designed as a tool for assessing each individual's writing, and then using that assessment as a basis for differentiating writing instruction. This session will work through the document entitled "Teaching to the Next Level" and will discuss writing supports and strategies for students at different writing levels, including the use of AAC and co-construction to assist each individual to learn to generate narratives.?
According to Jane’s blog post announcement, she will be posting a recording of this session afterwards.
