DESCRIPTION

This webinar outlines a protocol for teaching vocabulary in a Minspeak® system that uses semantic mapping, a teaching approach that builds meaning-based connections between words. Teaching by “Icon Family” is an instructional approach that is specifically geared toward semantic-based vocabulary programs, such as the Unity® program and LAMP® Words for Life. A specific protocol will be described which can be replicated by families and educational teams.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the 7-step process of teaching vocabulary through the icon family approach.

  2. Define an icon family group.

  3. Develop an icon family tree, family story, and at least 2 icon family activities.
