For our students that are learning how to communicate using AAC, it is like learning a new language. In order for students to learn their new AAC language it is much like being in a foreign language immersion classroom. OT and PT’s work on the development of essential functional skills to increase functional independence at school and in life. Being able to communicate during these activities results in better lifelong outcomes for our students. In this session you will learn how to be part of making autonomous communications happen for your students.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define three methods of access for AAC.
2. Name three high or low tech AAC tools and explain
how they can be integrated during functional activities.
3. Model a novel message using either a high or low tech device.
4. Identify two ways that the AAC device can be integrated to increase independence in basic ADL’s, functional mobility and/or career goals.
