National Assistive Technology Awareness Day 2019

National Assistive Technology Awareness Day 2019

Senate Resolution 103 designated today, March 27, 2019, as National Assistive Technology Awareness Day! Read Senate Resolution 103 HERE.

Assistive Technology, or AT, is any item (equipment, software, product, system), commercially available or specially adapted/created, that helps a person with a disability to participate in activities and complete everyday tasks (including daily living tasks, education, work, and recreation). Examples of “mainstream” AT include glasses or contact lenses to correct vision acuity, crutches to help you walk when you break your leg, and even the remote for your TV.

Anything that increases, maintains, or improves the functional capabilities (speaking, typing, writing, remembering, bathing, seeing, hearing, learning, walking, dressing, etc.) of individuals with disabilities is considered AT. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) falls under the umbrella of AT.
