ABOUT: This hands-on workshop delves into the world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have complex communication needs. Beginning with an introduction to AAC, the session explores
current options,
language learning strategies,
system choices, and
effective interventions for promoting unique and responsive communication.
The workshop also touches on literacy development for AAC users. Leave with practical tips for implementation in
schools,
day centers,
group homes, and
other settings across an individual's lifespan.
A key focus will be on the AAC Communication Bill of Rights and its significance in
fostering communication skills,
promoting empowerment, and
potentially reducing the need for behavioral interventions.
Using a disability justice lens, you will leave with an understanding of AAC and its vital role in promoting equity and inclusion for people with disabilities.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Following this workshop, participants will:
Define AAC, robust language systems, and understand the role of aided language stimulation in AAC intervention.
Gain familiarity with the leading AAC systems currently available, their design, and their applicability for various individuals who require AAC.
Learn how to apply the AAC Communication Bill of Rights using a disability justice lens in all settings where present and future AAC users may be.
